And searches for her suitcase on the baggage carousel \u2014 in vain. Miriam Mueller, Managing Director of Startcon, remembers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo after the welcome, we quickly bought the basics. Only to set off again shortly afterwards. Because with a new start like this, there are simply a lot of things missing. And to make matters worse, she had also caught coronavirus while travelling. Despite this, she remained positive the whole time.\u201d And her lost suitcase arrives a few days later after all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mariana works as a theatre nurse in a Berlin hospital. After a long search, she is able to swap her initial accommodation in the nurses\u2019 home, which is practically furnished with a table, chair and bed, for a larger one-bedroom flat in Friedrichshain. Over a dinner, together in a Vietnamese restaurant just round the corner, Miriam and Mariana take stock two years after their last meeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\"><strong>Was the job in Germany a good decision?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">\u201cDefinitely! I feel very comfortable and am happy with my decision. Even if it was complicated.&#8221; Mariana laughs. &#8220;Preparing for the recognition exam as a nursing specialist and being familiarised with the work at the hospital \u2014 and then arriving and settling in. It was all a bit much at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the exam, Mariana completed a course at Startcon \u2014 13 intensive weeks. \u201cMariana was an extremely fast learner and completed the course in a very short time,\u201d reports Miriam enthusiastically. \u201cIt\u2019s usually two months of theory, interspersed with practical phases on the ward. I would now say that two or three months on the ward before starting the preparation course would be good to get used to the work. But, understandably, hospitals don\u2019t want their new employees to have the status of auxiliary staff for long. They then earn less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\"><strong>Sometimes there are also tears<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">Sometimes the course turns into coaching. \u201cIn some cases, there was a need to talk about the culture shock after class because everyone was so emotional. The first time on the ward, the familiarisation, settling in, that\u2019s exhausting. There can always be problems, even with colleagues,\u201d reports Miriam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">Mariana was different. But she has also had her own experiences: \u201cAs a rule, things go very well with colleagues and patients. But unfortunately there are also other situations. We foreign nursing staff \u2014 from Latin America, Romania, Russia or Ukraine \u2014 make up an estimated 50 to 60 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>From Mexico via the Netherlands and Poland to Berlin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">Mariana already knew in 2004 that she wanted to work in the healthcare sector abroad one day: \u201cA friend\u2019s father was a radiologist and told me about the shortage of nurses. There isn\u2019t one in Mexico. However, the payment there is poor.\u201d But first she went to the Netherlands as an au pair and studied economics in Warsaw. She then returned to Mexico to finally realise her dream with another degree. \u201cBecause I wanted to go abroad and knew about the shortage of nursing staff, I switched from economics to health. Around 2014, I saw offers for geriatric nurses for the first time. But I didn&#8217;t necessarily want to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">With her bachelor\u2019s degree in nursing, she initially gained three years of experience as an operating theatre specialist in plastic surgery. \u201cThere were often several operations at the same time. I was in the operating theatre for a strenuous eight hours without a break. And I actually had other plans. So I resigned and shortly afterwards discovered a German job advert for nurses on LinkedIn. That was on a Wednesday. I applied on Thursday and got the call from Germany on Friday.\u201d No coincidence, Mariana believes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What is a \u201cNupsi\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">She passes her German exam at the Goethe-Institut in Mexico with distinction. \u201cMariana was a very special candidate. She spoke excellent German when she arrived.\u201d Nevertheless, the first few weeks in the operating theatre are a challenge. \u201cIt can be difficult on a normal ward. But in the operating theatre! It would be complicated even as a native speaker. It\u2019s always loud, the atmosphere is tense. We don\u2019t understand each other so well when we\u2019re wearing bonnets and face masks. Some speak German as a foreign language, others speak dialect. Technical and colloquial language mix. What is a \u201cNupsi\u201d, for example? It can be anything, any little thing. This can be tricky, no matter how hard you work and how good your language skills are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\"><strong>A question of recognition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">Mariana\u2019s Mexican bachelor&#8217;s degree is not fully recognised by the German authorities \u2014 due to the different practical and theoretical modules compared to the German training. She therefore has to take an exam to prove that she now has the same level of knowledge as a German carer. As this is a training occupation in Germany, she still does not automatically have a bachelor\u2019s degree with the specialist title. \u201cHowever, the German authorities are now endeavouring to grant foreign specialists a bachelor\u2019s degree. We are supporting Mariana in this endeavour. After all, four years of Bachelor\u2019s studies and one year of compulsory community service in hospital plus practical operating theatre experience versus three years of training does make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">And Mariana is highly motivated. \u201cWorking in the operating theatre is often stressful, but it\u2019s also nice, a world of its own. And in an emergency, things have to move quickly.\u201d Miriam is impressed. \u201cIt seems like you really enjoy doing it.\u201d Mariana beams. \u201cAbsolutely!\u201d \u201cIt was clear to me from the start: Mariana knows what she wants, she\u2019ll go her own way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Winter is not a problem for me<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">\u201cHave you arrived well in Berlin?\u201d Mariana nods. She recently moved to the angiology department and is looking forward to her new role. In her private life, moving into her new flat is one of her favourite experiences. \u201cIt felt like winning the lottery. It was also great to rediscover the city. I had a lot of good experiences. Only the people are sometimes a bit more open and friendly in Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">\u201cWhat did we do well as an agency, what would you have liked differently? Do you have any tips for colleagues who want to get started?\u201d Miriam wants to know. \u201cOh yes, speak better German. I would also have liked to have prepared myself for the technical language in Mexico.\u201d According to Miriam, Startcon now also offers courses for candidates abroad. Mariana would also have liked to have known beforehand that it can be difficult to fulfil her wish for a larger flat after a successful start. In the tight housing market, she only found her new home through her network at work. \u201cFortunately, Startcon took care of everything else. The paperwork and dealing with the authorities would have really overwhelmed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If I could make a wish<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">Miriam would have liked to have had personal mentors for every new nursing staff member in order to overcome the teething problems. \u201cRecruiting projects should actually be set up many years in advance. With special wards and well-trained carers, where the new recruits first arrive. There are great ideas in this field. But some hospitals often only start recruiting abroad when they are already at their limit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;\">Mariana recovers from her strenuous shifts with plenty of sleep and Krav Maga. Or she visits friends in Brussels, Leipzig, Hamburg and Poland. \u201cPoland is my second home.\u201d In addition to Polish and her native Spanish, she also speaks English, Dutch and French. She has already been back to Mexico twice in the meantime. Does she miss anything here in Germany? \u201cYes, my family and the food. Most of all the beans. Miriam Mueller, Gesch\u00e4ftsf\u00fchrerin der Startcon, erinnert sich: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201eAlso haben wir nach der Begr\u00fc\u00dfung schnell die Basics besorgt. Um uns kurz darauf erneut auf den Weg zu machen. Denn bei einem solchen Neuanfang fehlt es einfach an vielen Dingen. Und zu allem \u00dcberfluss hatte sie sich auf der Reise auch noch mit Corona angesteckt. Trotzdem ist sie die ganze Zeit positiv geblieben.\u201c Und ihr verlorener Koffer kommt ein paar Tage sp\u00e4ter doch noch an.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mariana arbeitet als OP-Pflegefachkraft in einem Berliner Krankenhaus. Ihre praktisch mit Tisch, Stuhl und Bett eingerichtete Erstunterkunft im Schwesternwohnheim kann sie nach langem Suchen gegen eine gr\u00f6\u00dfere Einzimmerwohnung in Friedrichshain tauschen. Beim gemeinsamen Abendessen in einem vietnamesischen Restaurant gleich um die Ecke ziehen Miriam und Mariana zwei Jahre nach ihrem letzten Treffen Bilanz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>War der Job in Deutschland eine gute Entscheidung?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201eAuf jeden Fall! Ich f\u00fchle mich sehr wohl und bin zufrieden mit meiner Entscheidung. Auch wenn es kompliziert weiterging.\u201c Mariana lacht. \u201eAuf die Anerkennungspr\u00fcfung als Pflegefachkraft vorbereiten und in die Arbeit im Krankenhaus einweisen lassen \u2013 und nebenbei noch ankommen und mich einleben. Das war alles ein bisschen viel auf einmal.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vor der Pr\u00fcfung absolviert Mariana einen Kurs bei der Startcon \u2013 13 intensive Wochen. \u201eMariana war eine extrem schnelle Lernerin und hat es in k\u00fcrzester Zeit geschafft\u201c, berichtet Miriam begeistert. \u201eIn der Regel sind es zwei Monate Theorie, unterbrochen durch Praxisphasen auf Station. Inzwischen w\u00fcrde ich sagen, zwei, drei Monate auf Station vor Beginn des Vorbereitungskurses w\u00e4ren gut, um bei der Arbeit anzukommen. Doch verst\u00e4ndlicherweise m\u00f6chten die Krankenh\u00e4user ihre neuen Mitarbeitenden nicht lange im Hilfskraftstatus haben. Die dann ja auch weniger verdienen.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Manchmal gibt es auch Tr\u00e4nen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitunter ger\u00e4t der Kurs zum Coaching. \u201eIn einigen F\u00e4llen gab es das Bed\u00fcrfnis, nach dem Unterricht \u00fcber den Kulturschock zu reden, weil alle so emotional waren. Die erste Zeit auf Station, die Einarbeitung, das Ankommen, das ist anstrengend. Es kann immer Probleme geben, auch mit Kolleg:innen\u201c, berichtet Miriam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Da war Mariana anders. Doch auch sie hat so ihre Erfahrungen gemacht: \u201eIn der Regel l\u00e4uft es mit den Kolleg:innen und Patient:innen sehr gut. Doch es gibt leider auch andere Situationen. Wir ausl\u00e4ndischen Pflegekr\u00e4fte \u2013 aus Lateinamerika, Rum\u00e4nien, Russland oder der Ukraine \u2013 machen sch\u00e4tzungsweise 50 bis 60\u00a0Prozent aus.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Von Mexiko \u00fcber die Niederlande und Polen nach Berlin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dass Mariana einmal im Ausland im Gesundheitssektor arbeiten will, wei\u00df sie schon 2004. \u201eDer Vater einer Freundin war Radiologe und erz\u00e4hlte mir vom Pflegekr\u00e4ftemangel. Den gibt es in Mexiko nicht. Allerdings ist die Bezahlung dort schlecht.\u201c Zun\u00e4chst geht sie aber als Au-pair in die Niederlande und studiert Wirtschaft in Warschau. Um dann zur\u00fcck in Mexiko mit einem weiteren Studium ihren Traum endlich in Angriff zu nehmen. \u201eWeil ich ins Ausland wollte und vom Mangel an Pflegekr\u00e4ften wusste, bin ich von Wirtschaft zu Health gewechselt. Etwa 2014 habe ich zum ersten Mal Angebote f\u00fcr Altenpflegekr\u00e4fte gesehen. Doch das wollte ich nicht unbedingt machen.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mit ihrem Bachelor in Krankenpflege sammelt sie zun\u00e4chst drei Jahre Erfahrungen als OP-Fachkraft in der plastischen Chirurgie. \u201eH\u00e4ufig waren es mehrere Eingriffe gleichzeitig. Da stand ich schon mal anstrengende acht Stunden ohne Pause im OP. Und eigentlich hatte ich ja andere Pl\u00e4ne. Also habe ich gek\u00fcndigt und kurz darauf eine deutsche Stellenanzeige f\u00fcr Pflegekr\u00e4fte auf LinkedIn entdeckt. Das war an einem Mittwoch. Am Donnerstag habe ich mich beworben und am Freitag kam der Anruf aus Deutschland.\u201c Alles kein Zufall, glaubt Mariana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Was ist ein Nupsi?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ihre Deutschpr\u00fcfung am Goethe-Institut in Mexiko besteht sie mit Bravour. \u201eMariana war schon eine besondere Kandidatin. Bei ihrer Ankunft sprach sie hervorragend Deutsch.\u201c Trotzdem sind die ersten Wochen im OP eine Herausforderung. \u201eAuf einer normalen Station kann es schon schwierig sein. Aber im OP! Das w\u00e4re sogar als Muttersprachlerin kompliziert. Es ist immer laut, die Atmosph\u00e4re ist angespannt. Mit Hauben und Mundschutz verstehen wir uns nicht so gut. Manche sprechen Deutsch als Fremdsprache, andere Dialekt. Fach- und Umgangssprache mischen sich. Was bitte ist zum Beispiel ein Nupsi? Das kann alles sein, irgend so ein kleines Ding. Da kannst du noch so konzentriert arbeiten und die besten Sprachkenntnisse haben.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Eine Frage der Anerkennung<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marianas mexikanischer Bachelor wird von den deutschen Beh\u00f6rden nicht vollst\u00e4ndig anerkannt \u2013 wegen unterschiedlicher praktischer und theoretischer Module im Vergleich zur deutschen Ausbildung. Deshalb muss sie im Rahmen einer Pr\u00fcfung nachweisen, dass sie inzwischen Kenntnisse auf dem Stand einer deutschen Pflegefachfrau besitzt. Da das in Deutschland ein Ausbildungsberuf ist, hat sie mit dem Fachkrafttitel trotzdem nicht automatisch einen Bachelor. \u201eInzwischen streben die deutschen Beh\u00f6rden aber an, den ausl\u00e4ndischen Fachkr\u00e4ften einen Bachelor zu erteilen. Dabei unterst\u00fctzen wir Mariana. Denn vier Jahre Bachelor-Studium und ein Jahr obligatorischer Zivildienst im Krankenhaus plus praktische OP-Erfahrung versus drei Jahre Ausbildung, das ist schon ein Unterschied.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Und Mariana ist hochmotiviert. \u201eDie Arbeit im OP ist zwar oft stressig, aber es ist auch sch\u00f6n, eine Welt f\u00fcr sich. Und in einem Notfall muss es eben schnell gehen.\u201c Miriam ist begeistert. \u201eEs wirkt so, als ob du das sehr gerne machst.\u201c Mariana strahlt. \u201eAuf jeden Fall!\u201c \u201eMir war von Anfang an klar: Mariana wei\u00df, was sie will, sie wird ihren Weg gehen.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Winter ist f\u00fcr mich kein Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201eBist du gut in Berlin angekommen?\u201c Mariana nickt. Vor kurzem ist sie in die Angiologie gewechselt und freut sich auf ihren neuen Aufgabenbereich. Privat geh\u00f6rt der Umzug in die neue Wohnung zu ihren sch\u00f6nsten Erlebnissen. \u201eEs f\u00fchlte sich an wie ein Lottogewinn. Au\u00dferdem war es toll, die Stadt neu zu entdecken. Ich habe viele gute Erfahrungen gemacht. Au\u00dferdem h\u00e4tte ich mich am liebsten schon in Mexiko auf die Fachsprache vorbereitet.\u201c Daf\u00fcr bietet die Startcon laut Miriam inzwischen auch Kurse f\u00fcr Kandidat:innen im Ausland an. Gern h\u00e4tte Mariana auch vorher gewusst, dass es schwierig werden kann, sich im Anschluss an einen erfolgreichen Start den Wunsch nach einer gr\u00f6\u00dferen Wohnung zu erf\u00fcllen. Auf dem angespannten Wohnungsmarkt hat sie ihre neue Bleibe nur \u00fcber ihr Netzwerk bei der Arbeit gefunden. \u201eZum Gl\u00fcck hat sich die Startcon um alles Weitere gek\u00fcmmert. Der Papierkram und die Beh\u00f6rdeng\u00e4nge h\u00e4tten mich echt \u00fcberfordert.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wenn ich mir was w\u00fcnschen k\u00f6nnte<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eigene Mentor:innen f\u00fcr alle neuen Pflegekr\u00e4fte, das h\u00e4tte sich Miriam gew\u00fcnscht, um die Startschwierigkeiten aufzufangen. \u201e<span>Eigentlich m\u00fcssten Recruiting-Projekte viele Jahre im Voraus aufgebaut werden.<\/span> Mit speziellen Stationen und gut geschulten Betreuer:innen, wo die Neuen erstmal ankommen. In dem Bereich gibt es tolle Ideen. Doch manche Krankenh\u00e4user fangen oft erst dann an, im Ausland zu rekrutieren, wenn sie eigentlich schon am Limit sind.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Von ihren anstrengenden Schichten erholt sich Mariana mit viel Schlaf und Krav Maga. Oder sie besucht Freunde in Br\u00fcssel, Leipzig, Hamburg und Polen. \u201ePolen ist mein zweites Zuhause.\u201c Neben Polnisch und ihrer Muttersprache Spanisch spricht sie auch noch Englisch, Niederl\u00e4ndisch und Franz\u00f6sisch. Zweimal war sie in der Zwischenzeit schon wieder in Mexiko. Vermisst sie etwas hier in Deutschland? \u201eJa, meine Familie und das Essen. Am meisten die Bohnen. Die sind hier auch okay.
